FEA is a method of analyzing the strength of a component. The analysis is performed by modeling the structure into thousands of small pieces (finite elements). By simulating various loads (static, dynamic, temperature, etc.) the virtual structure's response to those loads is determined and quantified. From this the analyst can determine or predict:
- Pressure and temperature limits
- Fatigue characteristics
- Lifespan under operating conditions
- Weak spots
- Heat transfer characteristics
- Wear Patterns
- Causes of failure
